Past Future
Interrupts the belief that the past mechanically determines the present and future. By reversing the direction of causality, the poem asks whether present orientation can change the meaning—and therefore the effective power—of what came before.
You think your past determines your present.
You think your present determines your future?
What if our past is not fixed
But something we can rewrite?
What do you think dreams are for?
What if our future has already happened,
We’re just remembering it?
What if there’s nothing but the present moment?
What if that’s all there’s ever been?
What if that’s all that will ever be?
What if the present is infinite,
It’s only our perception that’s limited?
What if perception can deepen with practice?
What if that’s the ultimate capacity for life?
