Father to Son

Initiation

familybelongingrelationships

This is a letter from a father I wish I had saying the things I wish I heard and which I wish my children would hear from me. It’s about how to raise a boy without breaking him, and how love can rewrite what violence once wrote in us.

Son, you’re safe here.

I’ve got you.
Nothing you feel is too big for me to hold.
You don’t have to hide, perform, or hold it together alone.

You are not too much.
Your emotions, your energy, your intensity — they’re gifts, not burdens.
You don’t have to shrink to be loved.
I will not punish you for speaking your truth.

You are not too little.
There is nothing missing in you that you must earn before you belong.
You belong right now, as you are.
You are not a problem to be solved — you are a mystery to explore.

I see you.
I see your effort, your pain, your desire to be good and do good.
I see the way you get back up after every fall.
I see the man you are becoming, not just the struggles you’ve had.

I am proud of you.
Not for what you accomplish, but for the way you keep showing up.
You don’t need to prove anything to me.

It’s okay to rest.
Your worth isn’t measured by how much you achieve or endure.
You don’t have to hustle for love — you already have it.
You don't get tough by being hard on yourself.

I know what power you carry.
I want to see you risk, play, leap, fail, laugh, try again.
The world needs your full force, not just your careful steps.

Take risks and make mistakes.
There is nothing you can break that can’t be repaired.
When you fall, I’ll be here to help you get back up.

Trust yourself.
Your instincts, your desires, your creativity — they’re good.
When you follow them, they’ll take you where you need to go.

You don’t have to do it all alone.
Strong men know when to ask for help.
Let others carry the load with you — it’s not weakness, it’s wisdom.

The world is not against you.
You have a place here, a purpose.
You are meant to bring your light and fire to others — they need it.

I believe in you.
You have what it takes to face what’s ahead.
The man you’ve been trying to summon — he’s already here.

You’ve got this, son.
Now take that wild heart of yours and go test it against the world.
Dance with life until you’re breathless.

Fight for what matters.
Play hard.
Love harder.

Rise.

Go where there is no path.
Find your edges.
Claim your wings.

And explode into the darkness:

one

spark,

sun

becoming.
